Jungle Fury News Story
CASEY 18 – Male, Good looking, Athletic, fun
loving. Casey has a hard time with rules (think ‘Maverick’ in “Top
Gun”). He is a risk taker, a thrill seeker and a bit of a rebel. He likes to
do things his way. He is also a master of the ‘rig job’. He can fix anything
with a rubber band and some paper clips.
INT. COMMAND ROOM
Casey enters, finding BAI the mentor CAT trying to repair an old fashioned
radio.
CASEY
You wanted to see me?
BAI
I did. Would you like to sit?
CASEY
Naw. Too much energy. Just got through with
my workout.... What are you doing?
BAI
Trying to fix this radio. It was my father’s. I
used to listen to it when I was young. But it
hasn’t worked in years.
CASEY
Get into the twenty first century, Master. Get
a CD player? Better yet an IPOD!
BAI
Sometimes new isn’t better.
CASEY
Suit yourself. Mind if I have a go at it.
BAI
Thank you.
Casey starts to work on the old radio.
BAI
I’ve noticed you’ve been giving the team
unorthodox training methods. There is a
strict rule at the academy for following century
old procedures.
CASEY
Yeah, and that’s all good for century old warriors.
But we’re eighteen.
BAI
And you feel your ways are better than ours?
CASEY
Not better... different. Ever hear the old expression
“there is more than one way to skin a cat”
(realizing) No offense.
BAI
None taken.... But letting your team dance
during training... I do not see how this helps.
Casey takes the back off the radio
CASEY
Here’s your problem. Your main wire is severed.
You have an extra wire?
BAI
No.
CASEY
Alright. How about a potato?
BAI
Yes, there’s one in the bag. I was going to have
it for dinner.
Casey opens the bag and takes out the potato. He goes to work with the potato
and the wires.
CASEY
Going to have to find something else to eat...
Dancing helps by integrating something the team
likes to do, with the training they need to get. The
movements are the same...but now your ancient
martial art forms have rhythm. Same results, more fun.
BAI
We’re not interested in fun.
CASEY
Your Master’s told you not to have fun?
BAI
Well, no. But it was implied. One does not have
fun when training.
CASEY
And what if “one” does? We’re learning the
same stuff... Training just as hard... Bonding as
a team... But we’re enjoying it. Sometimes... old
isn’t better.
BAI
I see. You can have fun... and be disciplined.
CASEY
That’s what we’re trying. If its not working for you.
Then we can change to the way you think we should be
doing it. But chances are...We’ll still find a way to
make it fun.
BAI
No. No. You keep leading your team the way
you’re leading them. Apparently you can teach an old cat
new tricks.
CASEY
I thought that was an old dog new tricks.
BAI
The dogs stole it from us. They steal everything.
Music starts to blare.
CASEY
There you go. It’s fixed. I used the potato as a
conductor for the electricity until we can get a proper
wire. You know, it sounds pretty tight coming out of
there. I guess sometimes is better, too.
BAI
Thank you. You are truly gifted....I smell french fries.
CASEY
Yep. That’s the of the benefits of the potato radio.
